Charolais Stock Bulls at RumsdenCurrent Stock BullsHere at Rumsden we AI most of our pedigree cows, and some of our commercial cows, and we also run stock bulls from time to time. We currently have no stock bulls. However, we are seriously considering retaining home bred bull Rumsden Cruiserweight. He is a son of Roundhill Rocky, a sire of bulls to 14,000gns in the UK, but no more semen is available. Cruiserweight's dam is a very good cow Rumsden Titania, successfully shown, and her first calf Bianca is probably the best of our show team for 2008. Cruiserweight is her second calf, and she goes all the way back to the exceptional cow Coat Iris on the botton line. Our previous two stock bulls were Farleycopse Telemarque, a son of Doonally Prince out of a full sister to the dam of Farleycopse Turbo (28,000gns). Telemarque was purchased for the commercial herd, and produced such good calves we then used him on the pedigrees. He was sold in February 2008 to Neil Hardisty, HowHall, Cumbria. Burnside Taz was purchased in Perth in October 2003 in partnership with Farleycopse Herd. He cost 11,000gns, and was a very successful show bull in Northern Ireland as a yearling. He is a big, strong, correct, traditional British Charolais type bull who has bred females up to 5,000 for Rumsden Aussie, and bulls up to 3,200gns. In spring 2006 we purchased Mr Foulger's half share of Taz, and are now showed him successfully for two seasons. he has now been sold to the Hasemore family in Kent . We have semen available from both of these stock bulls. Previous stock bullsIn spring / summer 2004 we will be calving a few cows to Heathvale Sidney. Sidney came from Southern Ireland, where he was champion at Carrick on Shannon. he is a son of the great french bull, Hermes. Sidney's first calves have been very easily calved, and have their sire's beautiful head and good bone. The calves include two very good cross calves in the commercial herd. Sidney was only owned by us here at Rumsden for less than a year. During this time he served cows at Rumsden, at Farleycopse, and at Michael Cox's Chiddingstone Herd, and has now been sold on to Hackleton Farms. We previously had a few calves by Silver Prometheus, a bull purchased privately from the Harman Family, who's first calf was Rumsden Solitaire, Reserve Female Champion at the Royal Show in 2003. Prometheus was purchased as a calf, and was unfortunately injured young, but we do have a limited amount of semen from him. Prior to this we used Shoyswell Macbeth, a son of Brampton Chopper. Macbeth sired "Eat my Shortts", our Reserve Steer Champion at Royal Smithfield, and Kings Cup winner. We have only kept one Macbeth female in the herd, Persia, who in 2004 has a smart heifer calf by Enfield Newlook. Macbeth was sold on to Richard Wakeham-Dawson for his Graywood Herd. Perth October 1997 will probably go down as the worst Charolais sale from a seller's point of view, as the effects of BSE really hit the industry, coupled with an enormous oversupply of bulls. We only sold one of our bulls that sale, but made up for it by purchasing Andrews Miracle. A son of Maerdy Forum, and the exceptional cow, Claybury Clarissa, Miracle has left his mark on our herd in the form of females. They all have exceptional maternal figures, with loads of milk. They are short gestation, easy calved, big and long. They don't carry much flesh, because they are very hard workers, but they are incredibly easy to handle. Our first bull from a Miracle female was Ullapool, sold in May 2004 at Carlisle for 4,500gns. We have two more out of Miracle daughters born August 2003 aimed for Perth in Feb 2005 which we think a great deal of. Hampton Lancaster was purchased with the entire Hampton Herd as a calf at foot of the exceptional show cow Hampton Ballarat. We decided to keep him as a chasing bull because of his exceptional length and width. Unfortunately we lost him with a broken leg very young. We had 3 calves. The bull sold in Perth for 3,500gns. One of the heifers was Rumsden Obsession, whose first calf Solitaire was Reserve Female Champion at the Royal Show in 2003. The other heifer was Rumsden Oolala whose first calf Samurai sold in Perth for 14,000gns, (and has sired bulls to 9,000gns) and her second calf Tsar sold privately to Will Shortt in Northern Ireland for 5,000gns (and has sired bulls to 13,000gns). Just how good Lancaster might have been, we will never know!
